Life as an Informatics Major

Developing the Next Generation of Big Data Systems & Storage

Learn how to put computing into context with the power and insights of big data. Informatics majors develop the skills that turn big data into knowledge. That knowledge is used to solve problems at large-scale companies and organizations.

Research Experience

Get hands-on experience researching with our faculty mentors. Our labs include a Bioinformatics Lab, Biological Artificial Intelligence Lab, Software Research Lab, Very Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) Lab, and more.

Study Abroad Opportunities

Earn credit towards your informatics degree while living in another country, including Costa Rica, England, France, and Italy.

Business Informatics

The business informatics concentration explores the crossover between technology, business, and society. In the concentration, you’ll learn how to utilize information management tools to process, manage, and analyze business-related data.

Cybersecurity

In the cyberspace concentration, you'll learn about cyberspace and its underlying infrastructure. You'll understand how systems are vulnerable to a wide range of risks that stem from physical and cyber threats and hazards.

Health Informatics

Become a designer, developer, and manager for health information systems through the health informatics concentration. This concentration covers emerging technology and information systems in healthcare so you can keep up with the rapid changes in electronic health records, health information systems, and information service provider networks.

Interactive Media Technology

Harness the technical, artistic, and management aspects of interactive and dynamic technology. Learn media component design and production, interactive web programming, visual design, animation, interactive design, digital publishing, writing for new media, user interface design, and project management in this concentration.

Systems Administration

Get a stronger foundation in programming, data-architecture, networking administration, and network security in the systems administration concentration. Information systems administrators can work in nearly any industry to manage computer systems for a corporation, institution, or department.

Graduation Requirements

Informatics majors are required to maintain a grade of “C” or better in each major course and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 to graduate.

The course requirements for the informatics major depend on which concentration you choose. See the full requirements for each concentration:

To earn a minor in informatics, you will need to complete 18 credits hours of informatics courses. Of that, a minimum of 6 must be at either the 300 or 400 level.
