University Art Museum鈥檚 summer season to feature four exhibits

Paintings and drawings, sculpture and a collage are a sampling of works that will be displayed during the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum鈥檚 summer season.

An opening reception for the public will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, June 9. A private preview of the installations for museum members will be held from 4-6 p.m. that day.

Four exhibitions, including three new ones, will be displayed.

  • 鈥淧ierre Bonnard: Landscapes from Le Cannet鈥 will feature 24 works 鈥 drawings, paintings and a lithograph 鈥 from the collection of the Mus茅e Bonnard in Le Cannet, France. The city was the artist鈥檚 home. The University Art Museum exhibit is the first time Bonnard鈥檚 work has been displayed in Louisiana, and won鈥檛 be on display anywhere else in the U.S. this summer. It runs May 27 to Aug. 12.
     
  • 鈥淐ONTINGENt: drawing and sculpture by Joan Tanner鈥 will explore many subjects central to the the artist鈥檚 five-decade career, including history, impermanence, and inconsistency. The exhibit will feature drawings and 3-D pieces created during the past 20 years. It is Tanner鈥檚 first in Louisiana. The exhibit opened May 23 and will be displayed until Sept. 16.
     
  • 鈥淪potlight on Francis Pavy鈥 will showcase the work of the 老司机福利网 native and University graduate, who earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in 1976. His work has been exhibited throughout the U.S., and in Asia and Europe. University Art Museum will feature 鈥淟ake Arthur Lotus,鈥 a large-scale collage that explores regional narratives and mythologies. A selection of wood-carved blocks Pavy used to create the piece will also be displayed. The exhibit opened May 19 and will run until Dec. 9.
     
  • 鈥淪piritual Journeys: Homemade Art from the Becky and Wyatt Collins Collection鈥 will feature a survey of vernacular Southern art from the private collection of the couple, who live in New Iberia, La. Over 100 artists will be represented. They include: Mary T. Smith, Howard Finster, Minnie Black, B.F. Perkins, Jimmy Sudduth, Prophet Royal Robertson, Burgess Dulaney, Clementine Hunter and Sam Doyle. The exhibition, which opened in February, will be on display until Aug. 12.

University Art Museum features 11,000 square feet of gallery space and is the largest exhibition space between Houston and New Orleans. It houses a collection of 18th- through 21st-century European, Asian and American art. In addition to its permanent collection, it offers changing exhibitions of regional, national and international art.

The museum is at 710 E. St. Mary Blvd., on the 老司机福利网 campus.

Museum hours are: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturdays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is closed Sundays and Mondays.

Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for people over age 62, $3 for students between the ages of 5 and 17, and free for children younger than 5 years old. UL 老司机福利网 students, and faculty and staff members can visit for free by showing their University ID card. Guided tours of museum galleries are available with the price of admission at 2 p.m. each Friday and Saturday.
